Over the past twenty years, Chester County Highway
Safety project has been a key link in the education of the community
concerning Highway Safety issues. Specifically the seat belt usage
has increased from 60-80% through the education and enforcement efforts
directed by Buckle Up PA working with Highway Safety Project. Additional
specific initiatives explained in Sections III and IV are critical
in our goal as a community education resource and outreach to save
lives (reduce car crash fatalities and severe injuries) in Chester
County.
Educational Programming
Survival 101: A Student's Guide to Staying
Alive is a police-driven
curriculum designed to encourage appropriate decision making among
middle and high school students. Developed by the Pennsylvania Department
of Transportation's Buckle Up PA Project, "Survival 101" provides
police officers with the multi media tools necessary to successfully
lead a dynamic, hard-hitting presentation. Middle and high school
students - ages 12-18 - traditionally have been a difficult audience
to reach. Attempts to change attitudes and behaviors in this age
group have always been a difficult task.
This curriculum provides a step-by-step program guide that allows
officers to draw from his or her own personal experiences when relating
to teenage crashes and fatalities. Program leaders who have "been there" can
explain to students what it's like to respond to a serious crash
and to inform loved ones of tragedy. At Buckle Up PA, we feel that
this personal approach - when paired with a high-energy multi-media
presentation - is the best way to reach this target age group.
The Back Is Where It’s At
This significant injury prevention
presentation deliberately attempts to address the younger audience
and respond to the ever-rising increase in the number of needless
injuries and fatalities due to non-seat belt use. Emphasis is placed
on the importance of keeping oneself safe inside a moving vehicle.
This informational program includes topics such as seat belts,
entire family usage, air bags and back seat usage by those less than
13 years of age. By use of demonstrations and interaction, the students
will be encouraged to develop these life-saving habits and urge their
family to do the same.
