Student Assistance Programming:
Commonwealth Approved Trainer (CAT)
for Student Assistance Programs
The Coad Group is a Pennsylvania Commonwealth Approved Trainer for
Student Assistance Programs. Professional training is required to serve
as a core team member in all phases of the SAP process. The training
offered by The Coad Group is consistent with standards and competencies
as defined by the Pennsylvania Departments of Health, Education and
Welfare. It ensures the appropriateness of recommended services, effective
local interagency collaboration and compliance with state and federal
laws protecting the privacy rights of parents and students.
Upon completion of SAP training and on-site competencies, team members
are eligible to receive thirty Act 48 credit hours and a certificate.
This certificate ensures the Board of School Directors, School Administrators,
parents, students and the community that team members have received
up-to-date professional training consistent with accountable standards
and appropriate professional procedures.
Upcoming SAP Training Dates
Student Assistance Program Newsletter: The
Guide Line
Design and distribution of monthly SAP newsletter, The Guide
Line. The Guide Line is a monthly newsletter (September
through May) addressing a variety of topics pertinent to Student
Assistance Programming. Funding is provided by the Chester County
Department of Drug and Alcohol Services.
Additional Training Opportunities
Group Facilitator Training
This two (2) day training is recommended by the PA Dept. of Education
for those who wish to learn how to facilitate educationally based
support groups in schools. The total cost for this training is
$150 per person. Group Facilitator Training can be offered on-site. 2007
dates of Group Facilitator Training TBD.
SAP Team Maintenance Training
This customized, one (1) or half (1/2) day training is based on the
needs of the SAP team. SAP team maintenance is a way for individual
teams to take a look at their effectiveness in working with students
and their families as well as how they function as a team. Presently,
the cost for team maintenance is $500 for one (1) day and $250 for
a half (1/2) day. Team maintenance can be offered on-site.
Topical Training
The topical training is usually a one (1) day training on a topic
relevant to Student Assistance such as eating disorders, cults, self-mutilation,
diversity, motivational interviewing, etc. The cost varies depending
on the trainer.
Every now and then, a community agency may contact the Educational
Services Department for training for their staff. The Educational
Services Department can provide assessment and consultation as well
as develop quality and innovative training and instructional materials
Other Services
Tobacco Cessation
The Educational Services Department offers school-based Tobacco
Cessation Girls Support Groups to all secondary public and some private
schools in Chester County. Groups run 8 to 10 weeks and focus on
topics of tobacco use and cessation, self-esteem, leadership and
decision-making. The number of groups offered each year is limited.
